What is Reiki?

Reiki therapy is a safe, gentle and relaxing Japanese (energy) therapy. The word Reiki is a combination of the characters “Rei” (spiritual) and “Ki” (vital energy). It is a hands-on-body therapy in which the therapist places their hands lightly on or over a patient’s body to facilitate the patient’s process of healing.

The concept of Reiki is that this vital energy (Ki) is channelled to support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Factors such as stress, trauma, negative thoughts and an unhealthy lifestyle disrupt this optimal flow of energy within your body, resulting in a block or distortion within the aura, leading to physical or psychological dis-ease.

The Ki (energy) of your entire body is driven by your thoughts and feelings, so the flow of Ki is dependent on the quality of your thoughts and feelings. Negative or dis-harmonious thoughts or feelings cause a disruption in the flow of Ki, as negative signals are projected to every cell of your body via your nervous system. This in turn affects your mental, emotional and physical health. According to research conducted by the AMA, 75-98% of mental and physical illnesses come from our thoughts.

The places where negative thoughts and feelings are stagnant or restricted is where Ki is restricted in its flow, and the organs that exist at these locations are restricted in their functioning. If the negative thoughts and feelings are not eliminated, pain and illness result.
The patient may be unaware of the negative thoughts and feelings that are lodged in the unconscious mind/body and therefore, are greatly hampered in changing or eliminating them. By enhancing the flow of Ki, the Reiki therapist can work directly on the unconscious parts of the mind/body which contain negative Ki-inhibiting thoughts and feelings and eliminate them.

As the Reiki energy flows through a sick or unhealthy area, it breaks up and washes away any negative thoughts or feelings lodged in the unconscious mind/body thus allowing a normal healthy flow of Ki to resume. As this happens, the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with positive Ki and begin functioning in a balanced healthy way, thus replacing illness with health.

From a scientific viewpoint, Reiki aligns your electromagnetic field or aura, producing electrical and chemical changes, which improve your physical and psychological wellbeing. Valid scientific data based on Reiki studies from Minnesota (USA), have found that Reiki may assist in reducing anxiety, pain and fatigue, induce relaxation, and help relieve the symptoms of depression. As western medicine continues to explore alternative methods of healing, Reiki plays an important role as an accepted and valued healing practice.

A Reiki therapist is trained to rebalance this vital flow of energy (Ki) within the body and stabilise the energy field of the individual. Once this optimal flow of energy is achieved, you can expect an overall improvement in your health and wellbeing, be more relaxed and at peace with yourself, and be able to cope more easily with life’s demands.

What can be treated with Reiki?

Reiki has a positive healing effect on all forms of illness and negative conditions and works in harmony with all other forms of allopathic medicine, including drugs, surgery, psychological care or any form of complimentary therapy. Conditions include but are not limited to minor things like head or stomach aches, colds, flu, tension and anxiety, as well as serious illness like heart disease and cancer.
The side effects of regular medical treatments such as chemotherapy, post-operative pain and depression may also be reduced or eliminated. Stress reduction with some improvement in one’s physical and psychological health is what most people experience.

What does a regular Reiki treatment involve?

Once the reason for the treatment is established, the patient will lay fully clothed on the treatment table and asked to close their eyes and relax. This is a quiet, calming treatment and there is no talking once the treatment begins.
Derek will perform the Reiki, at times lightly placing his hands on or near the patient’s body in a series of hand positions, depending on the auric field he is working with. These include positions around the head and shoulders, torso and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the patient’s needs.
Derek will occasionally take notes, which will be discussed with the patient at the end of the treatment. In some instances the patient will be required to follow-up on information presented.

What does a Reiki treatment feel like?

Patient experiences vary, but most commonly patients experience feelings of deep relaxation and peace of mind. As Reiki encourages you to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings, a state of peace and well-being is experienced. In this state, the patient can make clearer life-choices and symptoms of pain and illness dissipate.
Some drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or have visions and other mystical experiences. At the end of the treatment, you will feel refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.

Reiki is ideal for the treatment of the following:

  • Emotional & Mental stress
  • General Anxiety
  • Energy Imbalances
  • Physical Illnesses
  • Psychosomatic conditions
